What is Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dear Friend?
Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dear Friend is a supernatural drama film that continues the story of Sakuta Azusagawa and Mai Sakurajima following the shocking revelation that a beloved internet singer is actually the nation's favorite actress. Released as a single movie in fall 2026, this installment explores what happens when dreams begin manifesting as reality, forcing Sakuta to confront impossible events unfolding around him.
The film deepens the series' signature exploration of Adolescent Syndrome, the supernatural phenomenon that has plagued its characters throughout the franchise. When Sakuta receives a mysterious message from an alternate version of himself warning him to stop Touko Kirishima before reality itself is rewritten, he embarks on a quest to restore the world to its original state. The story grapples with the blurred line between perception and reality as social media documentation of these dream-like occurrences vanishes.
This movie is designed for viewers already invested in the Rascal Does Not Dream franchise, as it builds directly on prior character development and plot threads. The blend of psychological drama, romance, and supernatural elements creates a high-stakes narrative that questions the nature of reality itself. Those seeking character-driven stories with emotional depth and fantastical premises will find this continuation rewarding.
"Actually, I’m Touko Kirishima." The audience erupted in excitement upon learning that the true identity of the mysterious, wildly popular internet singer was none other than the nation’s favorite actress, Mai Sakurajima. The scene was exactly the same as the dream Sakuta Azusagawa had seen on Christmas Eve. Starting with Mai’s shocking confession on April 1, the impossible events that everyone once dreamed of keep happening one after another. The social media hashtag "#Yumemiru," where dreams come true, has vanished, and as Sakuta struggles with the disconnect between the reality before him and his own perception, he receives a message from a version of himself in an alternate reality. ―Stop Touko Kirishima, ―Before reality is rewritten. To restore the world to its original state, Sakuta sets out to find Touko Kirishima. This is a story about overcoming the "Adolescent Syndrome". (Source: Crunchyroll News, edited)
